Located just 10 miles north of the centre of Harrogate is the charming City of Ripon. The City has an interesting historical background including Viking raids and Norman rule, which is evidenced by some of the amazing buildings that still stand.
Perhaps the biggest tourist attraction is Fountains Abbey, which is situated 3 miles southwest of the centre. Set in the grounds of the stunning Studley Royal Park, Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian monasteries in England. The Grade I listed building was in operation for more than 400 years, until Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
In the centre of the City stands Ripon Cathedral, which has seen people come to worship there for over 1,350 years. Although four churches have stood on the site, the ancient Saxon crypt is one remaining part of the original building, which is believed to be the second stone building built in the historical kingdom of Northumbria.
Ripon really is a great place to live, whether you are looking for a quaint City to retire in, or a quiet base from which to commute to Harrogate, York or Leeds.
